New Zealand Sign Language Week

Each year, New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week celebrates one of Aotearoa’s official languages and the rich culture of the Deaf community. Led by Deaf Aotearoa, this nationwide campaign invites people across the country to learn, connect, and take part in building a more inclusive society.

NZSL Week is more than a celebration. It is a moment to raise awareness, challenge barriers, and recognise the importance of accessible communication in everyday life.

Why It Matters

NZSL is a vital part of identity, connection, and participation for the Deaf community. Increasing awareness and use of NZSL helps create environments where Deaf and hard of hearing people can communicate confidently and be fully included.
